I like to complicate things, so here’s my input:
Forgo the small dowel. Instead, drill an indentation on the bottom of the lid, so that it can’t be seen from the outside. Glue in a rare earth magnet.
Get a ferris nail that is shorter than the inner height of the box. Construct a guide for the nail that has room at the bottom to allow the nail to move, approximately the distance of the lower top piece.
The idea here is that the rare earth magnet will be strong enough to keep the nail suspended and blocking the lid from moving, all from the inside. To open the box, you will need a stronger magnet to pull the nail away from the magnet in the lid.
If you really want to get fancy, you could make a dowel with this stronger magnet somehow hidden in the side of the box, with a slight cut to allow your fingernail to grasp it.
I really would love to have the measurements for this box.I would make a bunch of these boxes for Christmas!!!!
