When you hear the term pipe saddling, notching, and fish mouthing, the first thing that comes to mind is that you need a tube notcher machine. Fitting those awkwardly angled tubes need not cost you hundreds of dollars. You can notch a tube even without a tube notcher.
Buying a tube notcher machine or outsourcing a fabricator who has one can cost you hundreds of dollars. You can save a lot of money doing your own notching just by learning a few basic steps with the aid of a marker, a measuring tape, and a standard metal cutter.
You can notch tubes easily by marking your baseline and your face line. The important rule to remember is when making the throat depth of the tube, use the general rule of thumb of 1/3 diameter or ½ an inch. Watch this video to learn more about tube notching.
